Android Inc. was founded in 2003 by Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger), Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.), Nick Sears (once VP at T-Mobile), and Chris White (headed design and interface development at WebTV) to develop, in Rubin's words: "...smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences".

Search engine giant Google acquired Android in August 2005.
On 5 November 2007, 34 Technology leaders gathered to create the Open handset Alliance. They announced Android, the world's first actual open and comprehensive mobile platform. The first phones were scheduled to ship in the second half of 2008.

“Android™ delivers a complete set of software for mobile devices: an operating system, middleware and key mobile applications.”
The world’s first Android powered phone, the T-Mobile G1 was announced on the 23rd of September 2008.

Android released their source code to Developers in October 2008.
Android is widely used across the globe today with great feedback. The Facebook group “Facebook for Android” has more than 82 Million monthly users.
Android is an open source application.
