Created by Jerry Yang and David Filo, their first website launched in January 1994, was called Jerry's Guide to the World Wide Web, while still studying at Stanford University. The site was renamed Yahoo later.

In 2000, Yahoo! began using Google for search results. Over the next four years, it developed its own search technologies, which it began using in 2004.

Yahoo was one of the first major well known websites online.
In August 2011, Yahoo! reported independent statistics giving it 302 million unique users globally. Seema Kamath (Product Manager at Yahoo! Mail) noted in August 2011, that the latest version of Yahoo! Mail had surpassed 100 million monthly active users and that Yahoo! Mail was the top email provider in the USA.

Yahoo! operates the web portal which provides content including the latest news, entertainment and sports information. The portal also gives users access to other Yahoo! services like Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Maps, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Groups and Yahoo! Messenger.
Yahoo is one of the most “all-round” websites online today.
